SPECIAL INFORMATION

The least expensive energy utility available for this home was grid electric. Natural gas was not an option. Consequently, based on the preferences and budget of the homeowner, the house was designed completely around electric. The cost to heat the home was $387 for 2002, or 5.14 cents/kwh. A passive solar design, tight building envelope, heat and air exchanger, and some truly innovative ways of integrating the foundation, floor, walls, and roof all help assure the home will have low maintenance and operating costs.

South facing windows on the rear of the house maximize winter solar gain.

The Heat Recovery and Ventilation (HRV) System helps with both energy efficiency and indoor air quality.
