Klem-Smith Residence Innovations: A Holistic Approach to Resource Efficiency - Homes Across America Search Return

Klem-Smith Residence

Goals of Innovation: To provide the maximum energy efficiency that the homeowner can afford using a holistic approach to home design.

Description: A holistic approach was used to facilitate this passive solar design. To maximize efficiency three major methods should be considered to create one design. The three methods of achieving energy efficiency are: 1. super insulate the home to cut energy costs throughout the year, 2. maximize collection of (free) solar gain with proper window placement, location and orientation of the home, and 3. store and distribute the heat (and cooling air) in an efficient manner such as the patented AIRFLOOR radiant system. The best approach is to combine these strategies based on the site particulars to conserve then capture energy for the operation of the home.

Obstacles: Every person could adopt the philosophy of buying the most energy efficiency that they can afford in all of their purchases, but they must be informed that they have options.

Cost Information: This home was approximately$120 per square foot ($140/ sq ft of heated space and $90/ sq ft for unheated space).
