Spears Solar and Geothermal

Goals of Innovation: To reduce the energy load of a building to support innovative heating and cooling on a small scale.

Description: The heating and cooling loads on the office are very small so the heating and cooling needs are small. The building is heated with:

1. active solar photovoltaics
2. passive solar design
3. geothermal water heater

The building is cooled with a 1 1/2 ton water dessicant cooling system.

Obstacles: The dessicant cooling system is not a standard unit to be installed. It was custom created and meets the needs of this home with exceptionally small cooling requirements.

Cost Information: The office was constructed for less than $100 per square foot. The long-term savings in utilities continue to off-set the short-term cost of the home.
